Gaming hardware and services company Razer has partnered with financial services giant Visa to develop a joint digital prepaid card within the Razer Pay mobile app, initially for users in Southeast Asia.
The Visa prepaid solution will build upon the Razer Pay app’s existing functionality, letting users add money or cash out as desired and use the app for both online and physical merchant payments worldwide. Razer has some 60M total users, and Visa is accepted at 54M retail locations around the world.
Razer Fintech has joined Visa’s fast-track fintech (financial technology) program to accelerate its access to Visa’s global services. Razer Pay is currently live in Malaysia, with plans to expand into Singapore next.
This partnership is specifically focused on growing what a release calls the “large unbanked and underserved” population of Southeast Asia. A 2016 report from KPMG suggested that only 27% of the region’s 600M people had a bank account. With its focus on a young, gaming-savvy audience, Razer aims to grow that figure with the help of Visa’s global services reach.
