Blizzard Entertainment Announces Return of Overwatch World Cup

Blizzard Entertainment will host the fourth edition of the Overwatch World Cup this year.

The entire tournament will take place in Anaheim, California the week of BlizzCon.

In previous years the Group Stage was held in several host countries, with the final stage taking place at BlizzCon.

The Overwatch World Cup will return for its fourth year of international competition at Blizzard Entertainment’s

annual BlizzCon convention. As the name implies, each team will represent their home country, with players selected from the Overwatch League

, Contenders, and the game’s ranked ladder.

This year, the entire tournament will take place in Anaheim, California, the week of BlizzCon (Oct. 28). The top 10 highest-ranked teams based on performance in past world cups will have their travel and accommodations covered by Blizzard, while all other eligible countries wishing to participate will “be fully responsible for their travel and will receive some support for hotels,” according to the announcement.

Last year, the Group Stage of the competition was held across four host countries: France, South Korea, Thailand, and the United States. Only the final stage was held at BlizzCon.

In past years, the World Cup served as a scouting opportunity for expansion OWL franchises looking to build their teams. Earlier this year, Activision Blizzard

confirmed that the Overwatch League will not expand in 2020 to better allow teams and the league to plan for the home-away system.
