Following months of teases and the sale of 12 franchise teams, Activision Blizzard today announced the official branding for the upcoming geolocated Call of Duty league.
And it will, officially, be known as the Call of Duty League. The publisher had previously referred to the league as the “Call of Duty Global League” during an earnings call, suggesting an expansion of the previous Call of Duty World League branding, but that will not be the case.
Alongside the official name and logo, Activision Blizzard also announced that the 2020 season will award more than $6M in prizing. The publisher confirmed a few other details, noting that the soon-to-release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be played during the first season, and that it be played exclusively on Sony PlayStation 4 in a 5v5 format.
The official Call of Duty League website confirms that the geolocated league “will travel from city to city,” but does not provide further details on format—such as whether teams will host multi-day homestand weekend events similar to the format that Activision Blizzard’s Overwatch League will embrace in 2020.
Representatives from the organizations behind the Dallas, Atlanta, and (one of the) Los Angeles franchise slots recently spoke with The Esports Observer about their plans to bring Call of Duty events to life in their respective home markets. All three groups also operate Overwatch League teams, and discussed ways in which they will apply lessons from hosting 2019 homestands in that league, and ways that Call of Duty events may differ in approach and execution.
