Los Angeles-based stats and data company Esports One will work with Acer for the hardware manufacturer’s upcoming Planet9 platform. The esports-focused service will be used by players to build teams, participate in tournaments, and improve gameplay performance—with the latter including game statistics drawn and analyzed via Esports One’s technology. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“When Esports One first started our discussions with Acer, we wanted to understand what they were truly looking to accomplish with Planet9,” said Esports One CEO Matthew Gunnin. “It isn’t in our blood to be just another data company, supplying whitelabel API solutions. We found a partner in Acer that saw the future of esports the same as us and put innovation front and center.”
Acer announced Planet9 at its next@acer press conference at IFA 2019 in Berlin earlier this month. Described at the event as an “esports social platform,” data will be used by players to map their performance, and pair them with appropriate coaches or training partners. Currently, League of Legends and Dota 2 are included in Planet9, with more to follow. An open beta of the platform will launch in January 2020.
After announcing a $3M USD seed round in January of this year, Esports One partnered with Riot Games Brazil to provide real-time stats for its Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLoL) broadcasts. Acer is also active as a sponsor in professional esports, through its Predator brand, which has ongoing deals covering the Intel Extreme Masters and Rainbow Six Siege, title sponsorship of Dota 2 team TNC Predator, and a brand ambassador agreement with one of Twitch’s top streamers, Mike “Shroud” Grzesiek.
