JD Gaming vs G2 Esports (Group B)

G2 came into Day 4 with a bang as Broken Blade pulled out his Darius. And just as expected, we had an explosive start in the top lane with an early G2 first blood but JDG answered with a counter gank, putting the Darius behind. G2 took most of the first objectives as they had a roaming advantage from their support, but JDG’s bot lane still found multiple kills in lane to accelerate the Hope’s Sivir which meant they could start to contest objectives. Despite JDG’s control during the mid game, G2 had a pretty sound teamfighting comp and they found a great 5v5 in their jungle and managed to grab a Baron with a delayed ace. Unfortunately, G2 couldn’t use this Baron efficiently and the game continued with fight after fight which G2 always seemed to come ahead until one fight in the mid lane where the early investment to Hope paid off as the JDG ADC’s damage was unmatched. With only G2 support alive, the LPL champions ended the game to protect their undefeated Worlds record.

Rogue vs Top Esports (Group C)

Hectic start to the game as two teams faced each other in the bot river for the crab in a 4v4 with TES coming out ahead with the first blood on JackeyLove. However, RGE once again showed they know how to play the early game as they found a couple of great ganks, mainly focusing Wayward. TES had a good control over the game as Knight’s Azir had some kills on him and they were stacking drakes for late game. But after a bad decision to fight a 3v4 in the top lane, TES lost a big fight and gave RGE a Baron opportunity.

While the first Baron didn’t give RGE the chance to end the game, it let them establish vision control on the map and delay the TES Soul point. With their superior vision, RGE then took another Baron, while TES decided to secure an inhibitor instead of contesting in a 4v5. The second Baron was more effective as RGE managed to hold TES in their base and they took the mid inhibitor. The game looked like it could’ve gone a little bit longer, but then Malrang found JackeyLove with a great kick-flash and gave RGE an undefeated first week.

  • Teams: RGE 1 – 0 TES
  • Time: 33:33
  • Kills: 18 – 6
  • Turrets: 9 – 5
  • Gold: 64.9k – 54.4k
  • Dragons: 2 – 2
  • Barons: 2 – 0

DWG KIA vs Evil Geniuses (Group B)

EG came ready for their last Week 1 game with a much clear plan as they constantly attacked the DK top lane in the early game, giving Inspired two early kills. DK, on the other hand, was focused on their bot lane and with that advantage, they were able to secure a very early first drake. Jojopyun had some good roams to stabilize his bot side and bring them back into the game, but DK still came out of the early game with over 1k gold lead. EG was able to go toe to toe with DK during mid game, but DK managed to edge out advantages in the objectives department with towers and the Soul point. But EG could not keep up with DK during the objective stand-offs as they were a little bit too passive and kept getting poked. They made one last engage in the Soul fight but ended up giving three kills, which was enough for DK to push mid and end the game.

  • Teams: DK 1 – 0 EG
  • Time: 29:24
  • Kills: 12 – 8
  • Turrets: 7 – 2
  • Gold: 52.2k – 47.5k
  • Dragons: 4 – 1
  • Barons: 0 – 0

100 Thieves vs Royal Never Give Up (Group D)

Great start to the game by RNG as they got the first blood for GALA with a great level one invade. This lead in the bot lane led to RNG getting two very early drakes for a fast Soul point. Still, 100T had some good movement around the map as Closer found some successful ganks and even picked up the first Herald to keep the game close. 100T’s control over the game slipped away during the Soul point fight as Ming found a great engage and RNG got four kills without trading any, on top of the drake. After this point, 100T looked too indecisive and afraid to face-check, which meant RNG had a big advantage in a 5v5 and they showed it by acing 100T with ease. With no members alive, LPL reps had no trouble securing both the Baron and the Mountain Soul. After the Baron, RNG wasted no time as they dove the tier three towers to ace their opponents once more and ended the game.

  • Teams: 100T 0 – 1 RNG
  • Time: 26:50
  • Kills: 4 – 17
  • Turrets: 3 – 8
  • Gold: 42.9k – 54.9k
  • Dragons: 0 – 4
  • Barons: 0 – 1

Gen.G vs CTBC Flying Oyster (Group D)

An extremely aggressive draft from both teams as we got a Catilyn/Lux vs Kalista/Pyke bot lane matchup. And despite the early attention from CFO to create a big cs advantage in that lane, it was Chovy who roamed for a dive to get himself the first two kills of the game. CFO kept trying to make plays around their bot lane all early game, but GEN either countered them well or took more at the opposite side of the map. And despite the fact the mid game fights were going in the GEN’s favor, CFO took a gamble with a Baron sneak and they managed to get out with three members alive. Even with the Baron, CFO wasn’t able to step into the GEN’s side of the Rift. They eventually had to give up a Baron and the Hextech Soul as they couldn’t get through Doran’s Sejuani. With the Baron gone, they tried for one last fight but GEN found an ace to finish the game.

  • Teams: GEN 1 – 0 CFO
  • Time: 39:14
  • Kills: 25 – 10
  • Turrets: 7 – 4
  • Gold: 75.8k – 68k
  • Dragons: 4 – 1
  • Barons: 1 – 1

GAM Esports vs DRX (Group C)

We had our 101st unique champion at Worlds 2022 with the Pyosik’s Kindred pick this game. GAM tried to punish this pick by invading level one with Graves, but DRX read the play and got three kills before two minutes for a disastrous start for the VCS team. We also had a great laning performance from Deft who had a 25-plus cs and 5-plate lead at 10 minutes and got his first recall of the game with 4k gold in his pocket. Even with this, he wasn’t the most dangerous member of DRX once the fights started as Zeka’s Sylas was dominating GAM. DRX with their lead had good vision coverage and they decided to go for the Baron. Despite a couple of close fights before that, GAM decided not to contest, but DRX engaged anyway. The first part of the fight was once again close but DRX continued to fight in a 3v4. They won from a disadvantage and with the Kindred ult still up, they managed to end the game in a sudden fashion.

  • Teams: GAM 0 – 1 DRX
  • Time: 23:20
  • Kills: 6 – 15
  • Turrets: 0 – 7
  • Gold: 37.8k – 47k
  • Dragons: 1 – 1
  • Barons: 0 – 1
