xQc Controversy Drives GTA V Over Just Chatting – Weekly Twitch Top 10s, April 12-18 – ARCHIVE

Having finished his month-long streaming marathon, Ludwig Ahgren could not maintain his place at the top of the pack – a position even more firmly held by Félix “xQc” Lengyel now.

Also of note, Rocket League has remained in the Top 10 for multiple weeks, suggesting a rise in interest for the esport.

Twitch’s Top Channel – xQc

Twitch is a constantly evolving platform making prediction somewhat difficult. However, one thing that has been a constant certainty is the massive spike in viewership streamers receive when they return from a ban.

Lengyel is no stranger to controversy, or bannings, and had recently been banned for the third time from the Grand Theft Auto V roleplaying server NoPixel. What was expected to be a permanent ban was reversed shortly thereafter, and Lengyel made his triumphant return to the server. The allure of controversy coupled with the reliable surge brought upon by being freed from a ban pushed Lengyel to a staggering watch time total of nearly 10M hours watched.

Unfortunately (or more likely further increasing his appeal among the masses) Lengyel was once again banned from the server – this time for a full month. It is unclear whether or not the streamer will appeal this fourth ban, but if he ever returns for a fifth time, who knows just how high the viewership figures could go.

Twitch’s Top Content – Grand Theft Auto V

As has been discussed frequently in our weekly update, Just Chatting has entrenched itself so firmly in first place that it would take a massive new game release or monumental moment to push any game above it. Apparently, Lengyel’s return and drama-fueled week of GTA V content was enough to do the trick. Of course, not all credit can be attributed to the controversial streamer, as the title had maintained a strong second-place position for several weeks. This laid the groundwork that allowed for such an explosion to occur.

Likely, with Lengyel off the server again interest will wane somewhat, but the game’s No. 2 position indicates a popularity for the category that supersedes a single influencer. Even if Lengyel never returns, it is possible the era of GTA V will go on for some time.
