The ESL One Los Angeles Dota 2 Major that was set to take March 20-22 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles has been postponed. A tweet by esports journalist Rod “Slasher” Breslau first alluded to the cancellation and then a Weibo post by Invictus Gaming Dota 2 player Hu “kaka” Liangzhi confirmed Breslau’s tweet.

Breslau’s Tweet read, “Valve and ESL have confirmed to teams and casters that the Dota 2 Los Angeles Major will be fully cancelled, sources tell me.” Breslau also tweeted that sources told him directly that the European travel ban instituted by U.S. President Donald Trump was the reason for the final cancellation.

“I can’t believe it, we tried so hard to go to this place for 14 days, but it (Major) cancelled,” Liangzhi wrote on Weibo.

The major was set to have teams arrive from all over the world including China, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Europe, North America, South America, and Southeast Asia.

The ban precludes teams from Europe from traveling to the United States for 30 days which means that Team Secret, OG, and Ninjas in Pyjamas who are in Europe would not have been able to make the trip. Virtus.pro and Natus Vincere have players in Ukraine.

ESL Dota’s official Twitter account later confirmed that the major in Los Angeles is canceled, but would be played somewhere else at a later date.

“In light of the recent travel restrictions and the evolving COVID-19 situation, ESL is postponing the ESL One Los Angeles 2020 Dota 2 Major,” the statement reads. “ While we were very excited to bring the first ever Dota 2 Major to Los Angeles, the safety and well-being of our players, attendees, coaches, partners, and ESL staff must come first.”
