The Story of Dota 2

by devaccess

Defense of the Ancients – also known as DotA – was first introduced as a ‘mod’ for WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos back in 2002. Today it’s one of the biggest esports in the world and it still stands for everything it did back then. Because Dota is a game for a community looking to challenge themselves. It’s a game that’s captured the hearts and minds of competitors and turned them into champions. After all, it’s an esport that’s fueled by nothing except a pure, unadulterated love for a beautiful and at times unforgiving game.

This is its story.

LOL will always attract more players then Dota2. The developers at Riot even said that it was the goal of their game – simplicity. To attract anyone and everyone (kids, girls, whoever). Dota2 was and always will be a community game for hardcore gamers. No need to compare it to games like Fortnite or LoL. It's a completely different world. I hope Valve keeps it that way.

I still remember submitting a hero in the late days of DotA. It was proposed to be released in 6.91 patch but it never happened. Back then, Dota2 is already taking the world by storm and I knew it will never be released. I've stopped playing the MOBA genre since the rise of LoL and Dota2; still, DotA will have a special place in me even after the inevitable demise of the mod. Cheers to all Dota2 players!

Not really a "mod", since it was built in the map editor and doesn't modify the game itself. Custom map is a better term for it.
