Tencent Announces Global Tournament Series, Arena of Valor to Join SEA Games

  • Tencent Esports announced that its nine-year-old Tencent Games Arena tournament series will be updated as “TGA Tencent Esports Games,” featuring eight professional esports competitions, covering more than 30 games titles.
  • Tencent Esports also announced that Arena of Valor will be an official game title of the 2019 Southeast Asia Games, taking place in the Philippines at the end of this year.
  • In addition, information on a Tencent branded “Esports Lecture,” “Esports Conference,” and “Esports Museum” will be released in June.

Esports has announced that its Tencent Games Arena (TGA) tournament series will be rebranded as “TGA Tencent Esports Games.” The brand will be attached to eight professional esports competitions, covering more than 30 games titles. In addition, the tournament series will partner with TGA Network. Tencent also announced that it will create  Honor of Kings competitions for women, separate from the current King Pro League (KPL).

These announcements were made at the “UP 2019 Tencent NEO Culture Creativity Conference” in Beijing, China, on March 24. Tencent Esports, as one of six digital culture divisions of Tencent, joined the conference alongside Tencent Music Entertainment, Tencent Games, Tencent Movies, Tencent Reading, and Tencent Comics. The conference also revealed a Tencent branded “Esports Lecture,” “Esports Conference,” and “Esports Museum,” with more information to be released in June.

Hou Miao, the Business Director of Tencent Esports, also announced that Arena of Valor, the international version of Honor of Kings, will become an official game title of the 2019 Southeast Asia Games in the Philippines. “On the one aspect, esports has expanded into multiple areas, reaching plenty of non-core esports fans,” said Miao. “On the other aspect, esports industry has got plenty of attractions from investments, non-endemic industries, and brands.”

In addition, Tencent Games announced that it will expand Honor of Kings into a multimedia franchise, with products in film, television, and music. Tencent will partner with Chinese media entertainment company Kaixin Mahua to produce multiple exclusive Honor of Kings drama shows, and to also host an Honor of Kings symphony concert tour in China.
