Not Done Escaping
Although its popularity fell considerably after in-game viewer incentives were removed, Escape From Tarkov remains one of the most-watched games on Twitch, boosting a wide array of streamers. This week the pack was led by Lazar, who generated over 2M hours watched exclusively through Tarkov.
The game has largely stabilized after the drop, but with new releases and a big esports weekend on the horizon, it is unlikely that Tarkov alone will be enough to give any streamer the top spot on Twitch going forward without another big event boosting the game’s total viewership.
Can’t Get Enough xQc
Lengyel has fully transitioned from controversial Overwatch pro into arguably the most popular variety streamer on the platform. Week after week he has been near the top of the rankings broadcasting different games, and this week came in second through the bread and butter of variety streamers – playing the latest big single-player release. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was Lengyel’s most-watched game of the week, helping the streamer generate 1.43M hours watched.
The Esports are Coming
Over the holidays, the weekly Top 10 has been largely dominated by individual streamers and non-esports titles, but that is all set to change this weekend. Friday, Jan. 24, will see the kickoff of both the North American and European League of Legends pro leagues as well as the inaugural Call of Duty League home opener. It is also a big weekend for fighting games between Evo Japan, a major tournament for titles like Street Fighter and TEKKEN, along with Genesis 7, one of the three biggest Super Smash Bros. tournaments of the entire year.
Finally, this weekend will also see the launch of the open beta for Riot Games’ new card game Legends of Runeterra, which caused a major shakeup on Twitch during its initial closed beta phase just a few months ago.
Streamers like Lazar and Lengyel have enjoyed a largely stable few months at the top of the charts, but their time is up, and the esports domination is unlikely to abate any time soon.
