Singtel Sponsors Singapore’s SEA Games Esports Teams, Launches Community Initiatives

Singtel, Singapore’s largest mobile network operator, announced it will sponsor the Singaporean esports teams that will compete in the 2019 SEA Games. The representative teams will receive monetary support but also have access to a scholarship component and educational opportunities. In a press conference attended by guests from the Ministry of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Ministry of Education, Singtel also announced the expansion of its PVP Esports program in the form of an amateur campus and corporate leagues.

“This year will be an inflection point for the industry in Singapore and the region. The popularity of esports and gaming is increasing exponentially,” said Singtel International Group CEO Arthur Lang. “Our aim is to grow the gaming ecosystem in the region, further driving recognition in Asia, to provide fans more opportunities to share in their passion. Community is a foundation of gaming and we’re excited to support them with these new initiatives. We want the community here to ‘get gaming.’

“SGEA is proud to work closely with a partner like Singtel, which has stepped up to bolster the local esports ecosystem in Singapore and the region,” said Ng Chong Geng, president of the Singapore Esports Association. “Both SGEA and Singtel are equally committed to the growth of esports in Singapore and we look forward to collaborating with other like-minded partners moving ahead.”

After launching the first edition of PVP Esports as an international LAN competition featuring top Dota 2 Database-Link-e1521645463907 teams such as Team Secret Database-Link-e1521645463907 and PSG.LGD Database-Link-e1521645463907, Singtel has focussed its efforts on more local engagement. The PVP Campus League will include a Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournament and will be open to all tertiary students while the Corporate League will feature ML:BB and Dota 2. The leagues will have a joint finale at an event to be held in the second half of 2019.

Insurance company Great Eastern was revealed as the exclusive insurance partner for the PVP Community leagues and signed a memorandum of understanding with Singtel to support the growth of esports in the country. Great Eastern has previously supported traditional sporting events but will be engaging in esports for the first time.

“Great Eastern is very excited to team up with Singtel, Asia’s leading communications group, to engage the local community and youths in their passion for esports,” said Ryan Cheong, managing director of strategy and transformation. “Like traditional sports, esports champions values such as discipline, perseverance and hard work. We hope that with the engagement through esports, we would have a better appreciation of this emerging customer segment.”

The telecommunications company also announced sponsorships of Singapore esports stalwarts Team Resurgence, professional fighting-game player Ho Kun Xian, and all-female team Asterisk. The sponsored group, titled as PVP Ambassadors, will work with Singtel on community engagement and take part in future Singtel gaming events.
