Robot Chicken Creators Loses Ape NFT “Fred” To Phishing Scam

by Ron

Seth Green, comedian and actor behind Robot Chicken, had previously planned to use Bored Ape #8398 as the star of his next sitcom. Not now he can’t even remember that the phishing bot was recently stolen for a phishing scam.

Green announced that he “got phished” on May 8 in a tweet saying he wouldn’t only lose the original ‘coated’ version of the ‘448,’ but also two Mutant Apes and a Doodle. Since everything is buried on the blockchain, Seth was known for the new owner of the Bored Ape Number 898, but didn’t realize if @DarkWing84 knew that ape was stolen.

DAY THEGAMER COMING, DEATH!

That’s a classic example of what we should expect for NFT games.

As reported by Buzzfeed (via Kotaku), Green planned on using the nickname “Fred” in a live-action show, where NFTs have come to life. Fred would have the same skeleton t-shirt, cigarette and glowing halo as the NFT, and play a bartender in a fictionalized NFT hellscape where procedurally-generated digital art pieces somehow have all the same authority as real-life people.

The trailer of the show was revealed just last weekend at VeeCon. It seemed like a pretty standard sitcom material with a little drama and a whole lot of pretentiousness. Until now, Green will likely not be able to find a network for that show.

The lawyer said that the owner of the NFT legally has all the legal rights of commercial use. That owner would be @DarkWing84 and not Green, since NFTs don’t manage legal or illegal transactions. They’re all in one another, which is why I heard of most of the news daily. According to the most important sign of a potentially stolen NFT, OpenSea only shows the “reported for suspicious activity” message that you will see above Fred’s portrait today.

“I’ve spent a few months developing and exploiting the IP, and making it into the star of this show,” Green said at VeeCon. “Then days before his name is Fred is about to turn out his world debut, he is literally kidnapped.”

On the plus side, although Cryptocurrencies and NFTs are crashing, Freds is likely to be low enough for a long time.
