  • The Country Manager for Riot Games Korea, Park Jun-kyu, also known in the community as Jaysen Park, has died after a battle with liver cancer.
  • Park joined Riot Games in 2014, and led the Korean region through its first year taking over broadcasting duties of the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK).
  • Riot President of Worldwide Publishing, Jin Oh, described Park as a “brilliant and respected leader.” His successor has not yet been named.

Park Jun-kyu, Country Manager for Riot Games Korea, passed away on Jan. 9 due to liver cancer. Known also as Jaysen Park, it was reported by InvenGlobal that he had been battling the disease for the majority of last year but still chose to carry on with his responsibilities. He was 44 years old.

Following a three year tenure as global business team lead for CJ E&M (a South Korean mass media company and parent of OGN), Park joined Riot Games’ Korean division in 2014 as director of publishing. He took the role of country head in January 2019, the first year in which the company independently ran broadcasts of the LCK competition.

When asked for comment, Jin Oh, Riot Games president of worldwide publishing, provided the following statement:

“All of us at Riot Games are extremely saddened by the loss of Jaysen Park, Country Manager for Riot Korea, to liver cancer. Jaysen was a brilliant and respected leader here at Riot who led our Korea region with integrity and passion. We will remember him as a kind, down-to-earth person who genuinely cared about the people with which he interacted. I believe that I can speak for everyone here at Riot who has had the privilege of crossing paths with him that it was a tremendous honor to have known him. He will truly be missed, and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”

The company has not yet announced who will succeed Park in leading Riot Games Korea. We at The Esports Observer offer our condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers at Riot Games.
