Overwatch League Sees Best Peak Viewership Since Opening Week – The Esports Observer|home of essential esports business news and insights

by Adam Stern

Overwatch League this past weekend saw its best peak viewership for a game since the opening weekend of the season, as the San Francisco ShockParis Eternal matchup garnered a high of 91K viewers. The Activision Blizzard-owned property switched this year from Twitch to YouTube, and viewership so far has been off from the peak of prior seasons – which is common in the first year that a sports league changes networks.

However, OWL is starting to see some upward momentum as it has seen viewership rise in the past two months, in part due to the addition of token drops. The peak of 91K viewers during Week 22 action exceeded all other weekends except the season opener, including besting the 88K peak during the May Melee tournament. Viewership for the entire weekend averaged 54K viewers on YouTube (which is not the total global viewership as OWL is aired on some other platforms globally). The 54K is up 5% from the prior week.
