The Evolution Championship Series (Evo) has announced NISSIN’s Cup Noodles brand as a returning sponsor for its fighting game tournament Evo Japan 2020. This will be the fifth consecutive Evo-branded event Cup Noodles has sponsored, dating back to 2018.

Since the first Evo Japan in 2018, there have been two annual Evo-branded events – the tournament in Japan taking place in January, and the larger main Evo event in Las Vegas near the end of the Summer. Evo in Las Vegas is routinely the largest fighting game tournament of the year, seeing growth in both attendance and viewership in 2019.

Evo Japan is a smaller-scale event, but has begun to build up some prestige of its own. In 2019, the event became part of an unofficial “triple crown” following Pakistani competitor Arslan “Arslan Ash” Siddique’s victory in TEKKEN 7 at both Evo events – the only player to achieve this feat in any game. Siddique ultimately failed to achieve the triple crown, falling in the early rounds of the TEKKEN World Tour finals late last year, but the conversation surrounding his unprecedented competitive success brought Evo Japan more in line with the main Evo event in terms of brand value.

Evo-branded events have previously secured partnerships with Shadowverse developer Cygames and arcade-themed anime Hi Score Girl. In recent years, the events have also begun to serve as a sort of trade show for fighting games, where developers will showcase new characters or updates to popular games, or debut the reveal trailers for new titles.
