Epic Games Acquires Social Video App Houseparty

Epic Games Database-Link-e1521645463907 has acquired Houseparty, a social video app for desktop and mobile devices. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

According to a blog post by Houseparty, user accounts between the two companies will be kept separate. In addition, data will not be shared across platforms. For the time being, the Houseparty app and its functionality will remain unchanged.

Founded in 2015, Houseparty is a free video app that allows users to chat online and leave one another video messages. In January, Houseparty integrated the game HeadsUp! and partnered with The Ellen DeGeneres Show for a promotional event.

“Houseparty brings people together, creating positive social interactions in real time,” said Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games in a statement. “By teaming up, we can build even more fun, shared experiences than what could be achieved alone.”

This is the second planned acquisition for Epic Games so far in 2019, the first being Rocket League Database-Link-e1521645463907 developer Psyonix Studios Database-Link-e1521645463907.

Known for Fortnite Database-Link-e1521645463907, the creators of Gears of War,  and its Unreal Engine, Epic Games completed a $1.25B funding round from seven firms in October including KKR, ICONIQ Capital, Smash Ventures, Team Liquid Database-Link-e1521645463907 parent company aXiomatic Gaming Database-Link-e1521645463907, Vulcan Capital, Kleiner Perkins, and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
